Chapter

I think I’ve spotted your targets,” Paul Wilson said as soon as he got Dakar on the phone. “I was staked out on the far ridge, and I saw two women of their description coming up the path toward the snake cave.”

“Saw? I told you I wanted them brought to me. It was a priority.”

“You’ll get them. The place was crawling with guys searching the brush and I had to keep my distance. But I’m zeroing in on two guys on motorcycles. As soon as I take them down, they’ll tell me exactly where to find Duncan and Riley Smith. I guarantee it.”

“I don’t want your guarantees,” Dakar said coldly. “When Madlock sent you to me, he said that you’d prove valuable to our arrangement. I haven’t heard anything but promises since you got here.”

“I’ll get them. This is the first time I’ve had a chance to even get a look at them. All I had was a photo and description.” His voice turned nasty. “And you don’t give me orders, Dakar. Madlock sent me, and I take my orders from him. He’s not too pleased about the way you’re handling his affairs. I’ll help you out when I can, but he’s my boss. Don’t you forget it.”

“I won’t forget it, you asshole,” Dakar said. “But you’d better report to me first.”

“I’ll even send you a photo of the man they were with at the cave,” Wilson said mockingly. “How much more cooperative can I be?”

Seconds later a photo appeared on Dakar’s phone.

Son of a bitch! Cade!

“Interested?” Wilson asked. “He’s not one of the guys on the motorcycles, but I can go back and try to get him after I take down the current targets.”

Dakar was tempted to tell him to do it. It would serve Wilson right to try to face down Cade. But Madlock was being a complete bastard about Riley Smith and Eve Duncan. “Maybe later. Concentrate on the two women.” He cut the connection. It took him a minute to get over the frustration and fury coursing through him.

He’d never liked Wilson, not from the minute he’d shown up on his doorstep; he’d wanted to find a way to rid himself of him ever since. Cade would have been perfect. Dakar knew Madlock had given Wilson other assignments to make contacts in this area, but he should have been told to make Dakar a priority. Fat chance. No one got priority but Madlock himself.

So he’d have to give Eve Duncan to Madlock. But at least he’d get an opportunity to squeeze the information he needed out of Riley Smith if Wilson did a decent job.
